Rock Samples
A core from the DuPont Geohydrological Survey well near Waverly, Tennessee.
These rocks are of the Devonian age and include limestone, chert (flint),
breccia, and black shale.
A quartzite boulder with a fault cutting across the original sandstone
beds. It was eroded into this round shape and transported into Michigan
by glaciers.
Vesicular basalt from Oregon. The small holes in this rock were made
because the lava cooled too rapidly for trapped gases to escape.
Garnet, muscovite schist from North Carolina. This rock started
out as mudstone but was metamorphosed to produce larger crystals of different
minerals.
Fossilized Silurian coral (left) from western Tennessee and modern
coral (right) from the Florida Keys.
Fossil corals, brachiopod, and a crinoid root from
the Silurian rocks of western Tennessee.
