I want to be a . . .
Mapmaker (Cartographer)
Will Fontanez
Q: When and how did you get interested in mapmaking?
A: "I got interested in maps when I was in college, but I liked
to do a lot of artwork when I was in high school. I took two or three art
classes when I was a senior in high school. When I went to college, I became
a geography major. One of the things a geography major does is draw maps.
I liked drawing maps. At the time, I didn't draw maps of the world. I was
more interested in learning how to design and show information on maps."
Q: What kind of courses did you take to prepare you for a career in mapmaking?
"Most of my electives in high school were art classes. I also took
geography and social science classes. While I was studying at East Stroudsburg
University in Pennsylvania most of my classes were in geography. It wasn't
until I went to Ohio University that I started specializing in mapmaking."
