The "Bostons" (and Crowders and Smiths)

Jack Crowder snoozes after writing to eTorch: In 1952 my “granddaddy” Jack Martin graduated from UT (he is the second generation of his family). He was given some money for graduation and went out and bought a Boston Terrier and named her after his college roommate Chase (did you know that Chase and Jack’s dorm rooms were underneath Neyland Stadium in those days?). Since then between my granddaddy, my aunt and uncle (Gordon and Sally Smith ’76), and my mom (Stephania Martin Crowder ’74), our family has had 6 Bostons. Because I am the 6th, my parents named me in honor of my granddaddy. I came from a Boston Rescue organization in Maryville. My parents live in Alexandria, Va., and because that is a long way from Knoxville I sleep on or under my UT blanket every night to remind me of our orange pride. We are also very proud that the 4th generation of Vols in our family, Jeannette Smith (’07), has graduated and will marry her college sweetheart Jared Stulz (’06) this October in Knoxville. Even though I am very well behaved I have not been invited to the wedding!

The Tiedemann-Fulton Family

Weston Fulton was A brilliant and famous inventor with hundreds of patents to his credit, which gave valuable service to the U.S. Navy in WW I & II, providing many improvements in pressure- and depth-related instruments for antisubmarine warfare. He spent four years at UTK working on weather-related subjects, and received an MSc in Mechanical Engineering. He developed and led his Fulton Sylphon Company from 1904 until his death in 1925.

My father-in-law, Frank Fulton Sr., attended UTK in 1917, interrupted by an AEF tour to France 1917-18, and returned to UTK sometime in the early 1920s, after which he worked with Weston for several years before developing an insurance business. My mother-in-law, a very successful artist, studied with the UTK Art Department from the 1940s to the 1980s.

My wife, Ruth Fulton, and I arrived at UTK the same year. Our family tale, mostly true, is that she was in my class, I gave her a "C" for which she vowed revenge, and it's been an adventure ever since. She didn't finish at UT - pregnancy and dissecting frogs didn't mix well - so she dropped out and has raised a beautiful family of four while accomplishing an impressive variety of part-time work in our peripatetic 46-year career through eight states and 22 moves!

The younger generation: Ruth's brother Frank, Jr., got his BSc in Chem Engineering at UTK in 1968, followed by a successful career with R. J. Reynolds. Our daughter Teena spent five years at UTK, working part-time at the Tennessee School for the Deaf, and graduated in 1980 with a BSc in Deaf Education followed by three years as a network news captioner for the National Captioning Institute, before marrying a West Point colonel. And our son Keene attended UTK for a brief period before joining the U.S. Air force, flying B-52s out of Minot, ND, and electronic intelligence flights from Offutt AFB here in Omaha, NE.
