Tennis, Anyone?
Some of the ladies in last month’s photo of the 1986 Tennisettes stepped forward to ID themselves, but not without a big laugh at the “big hair” of their day.
Kimberly Ann Bacon Speed (middle with purple sweater) told eTorch:
“Unfortunately, I can identify myself as being one of the girls with BIG HAIR in the photo. I am laughing so hard at this picture. I am proud to say that my hair has deflated greatly over the past years.”
Micki Graham Hawkins of Knoxville remembers the day the photo was made—“the wind was blowing really hard and we were freezing.” Hawkins says the group actually was called the Tennis Hostesses and “served as greeters and ran errands during UT’s men’s tennis matches.
“We had a great time supporting the team.”
Hawkins is on the front row, third from the left. She also identified Kathy Knowling, back row second from left, and Roberta “Prissy” Plemons Wilborn, who’s fourth from the left on the back row.
Plemons chimed in to recall that the photo was used in a pamphlet about the tennis team that year.
Two others were identified: Debbie Allen (on right in yellow sweater) and Leanne Ledbetter, wearing the Tennessee shirt.
