Knoxville Open Has UT Flavor

At least three former UT golfers will compete in the Knoxville Open June 21-24. Jim Gallagher, Jr., Mike Sposa, and Tim Turpen have been granted sponsor’s exemptions for the tournament.
The Knoxville Open presented by Food City will take place at Knoxville’s Fox Den Country Club. Matt Wright (’95) is tournament director.
Gallagher (’83), a 1993 Ryder Cup and 1994 President’s Cup participant, is a five-time PGA Tour winner. He has been nominated twice for PGA Tour player of the year. He has nine career runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour and 51 career top 10s.The Indiana native was fourth on the 1993 official money list and eighth in 1995. He joined the PGA Tour in 1984.
Sposa, a professional tour player for the past 16 years, has accumulated nearly $2 million on the PGA Tour. He has four top 10s on the PGA Tour and 16 top 10s on the Nationwide Tour, including a win at the 1998 Boise Open. The New Jersey native was a two-time All-American at UT and a member of the 1991 Walker Cup Team. Sposa was the 1990 SEC individual champion.
Turpen, a professional tour player for the past nine years, was a member of the Nationwide Tour in 2005 and has played on the Canadian, Gateway, and Golden Bear tours. He is currently eighth on the Gateway. The Tennessee native was a UT letterman in 1996 and 1997.
